When the british author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited 1891 the Haslital and the Reichenbachfall, at the view of this imposing waterfall he got the idea, to use this impressing location for the dramatic ending of his novel hero.
Since Sherlock Holmes despite meticulously planning the arrest of the very sneaky operating criminal Professor Moriarty failed, Holmes was permanent persecuted. Moriarty wanted revenge on the master dective for his ruin at all costs. At the Reichenbachfalls in Meiringen this pursuit ended. Sherlock Holmes and his constant companion, Dr. Watson, went up to the waterfall, where Dr. Watson was called back by a obsucure excuse back to Meiringen. Professor Moriarty finally saw the long-awaited opportunity for revenge, and tried to push Sherlock Holmes in the roaring waterfall. Apparently the two equal rivals tumbled in the depth after an intense duel together. Dr. Watson, who was aware in the valley of deceit and hurriedly climbed back to the waterfall, found Holmes' walking stick on a rock leaned and on the edge of the cliff his cigarette case and three pages of his notebook. Of the two rivals was no trace.
